THE results of the 14th annual Michelangelo International Wine Awards (MIWA) were announced last week, where a number of local wineries shone among 240 producers that were judged by an international panel.
The Grand Prix Trophy was awarded to the Marianne Estate Shiraz 2007 (the wine with the highest score in the competition).
The top producer was Diemersdal (Durbanville), while the most innovative wine on show was the Blaauwklippen Zinfandel Noble Late Harvest 2009.
The La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc 2009 won the trophy for best organic wine, while Mount Vernon Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 was the best garagiste wine.
Altydgedacht Pinotage 2009 was the best Pinotage, while KWV 20 Year Old Potstill Brandy was the best brandy on show.
The award for best “Golden Oldie” went to Anura Vineyards Shiraz Mouvèdre Reserve 2003 and Badsberg Noble Late Harvest 2005 won the award for best dessert wine.
Grand D’Or gold medals also went to local cellars Anura (Chardonnay 2009), Dieu Donné (Merlot 2008), Dunstone (Shiraz 2008), Grand Provence (Chardonnay 2009), Mischa (Merlot 2009), Nederburg (Eminence 2009), Neil Joubert (Shiraz 2002), Perdeberg (Rex Equus Cabernet Sauvignon 2007) and Welgegund (Pinotage 2009).
