2010-09-16
SEVENTEEN town councillors of Drakenstein Municipality (27,8% of councillors) are in the red, owing a total of R54 000 on their municipal accounts. Drakenstein is the municipality with the highest councillors’ debt in the province. This became clear this week following a parliamentary question on how much was owed by councillors in the province. The two councillors who owe the most, are Mpelese Tshaya (ANC), and Christopher Jochims (D) of Saron. Both owe more than R10 000. Another councillor with considerable debt is Spasie Kika (Independent). Deputy Mayor Wilhelm Nothnagel (ANC) is also a debtor. According to municipal spokesperson May Carolissen, the Municipality has now started to deduct the monies owed from the councillors’ salaries on a monthly basis. “We are considering making arrangements so that all councillors’ municipal bills be deducted from their salaries in future.”
