Free training for disabled

2005-03-17

THE Drakenstein Centre for Persons with Disabilities, in partnership with Stellenbosch University’s Matie Community Service and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, plans a training opportunity in business skills for persons with disabilities.

The free programme will start on Thursday 7 April and runs for six consecutive Thursdays until 12 May, from 09:00 until 17:00.

This programme targets potential and existing entrepreneurs who are physically disabled and provides them with meaningful skills development and training experience, thereby enhancing their ability to create their own job opportunities.

This is done through the development of the participant’s personal skills and behaviours, entrepreneurial skills and attributes, awareness of and capability for setting up and growing a small business as a disabled person.

The programme content includes entrepreneurship and personal empowerment; business ideas and business opportunities; marketing in practice; the marketing mix; market research; financial planning; costing and pricing; cash flow projection; break-even analysis; management functions and business plan formulation.

Objectives are accomplished through different methods and activities including presentations and lectures, group work, team assignments and exercises, analysis and discussion of actual cases, related readings, audio-visual aids and preparation of a business plan.

Although no formal academic qualification is required, participants must be able to read and write English and/or Afrikaans and do basic calculations.

There is no cost involved for participants.

The programme will be presented at the Drakenstein Centre, at the Paarl School of Skills, Simondium Road, Southern Paarl.
For further enquiries, please contact C Gerber of Drakenstein Centre at 863-0446/7 or Jeanne van Antwerpen of Matie Community Services at 808-3687.
