Boland wine shines

Boland wine shines

2005-09-29

THE Boland Kelder of Paarl was named the best overseas producer at MUNDUSvini, Germany's foremost wine competition and the largest event of its kind organised worldwide under the banner of the Office International de la Vigne du Vin (OIV).

In achieving this distinction it beat producers from every other New World country.

Boland also won a grand gold ("Grosses Gold") medal - the only South African producer to do so - for its 2002 Boland Shiraz Reserve No 1, and a gold medal for its 2003 Boland Chardonnay Reserve No 1.

The grand gold medal was one of only 17 awarded to wines from among 4 376 entries from 31 countries.

Judges from 36 countries evaluated the wines in a series of blind tastings. To achieve grand gold, a wine has to score at least 95 points out of a possible 100 while a gold medal requires a minimum of 90 points.

Boland MD and cellarmaster Altus le Roux said this was a most important achievement for the company, also for the exposure it was providing for the winery in Germany, which is developing into one of its foremost overseas markets.

The MUNDUSvini awards are the latest in a string of achievements for the winery since it changed direction some ten years ago from a predominantly bulk-wine supplier servicing producer-wholesalers to a quality producer of fine wines under the Boland brand.

It shot to prominence in 2001 at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London when its 1998 Shiraz and 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon both won the “Best in the World” awards in their categories.

This led to Boland being named Best South African Producer and Altus le Roux, Winemaker of the Year. In 2003 Boland's Shiraz was again voted "Best in the World".
