Correctional Services to the rescue
2010-10-02
TO celebrate Corrections Week from 26 September to 3 October, the Department of Correctional Services held an “Offender Labour for Public Safety Day” to clean up the area. This included repairs to the house of a 77-year-old woman, Annette Pedro of Greenfields, utilising offender labour. The house was damaged in a fire on 10 October 2001, and she has been unable to pay for repairs. Currently, although the house is occupied by her and the family, all the windows are broken and the roof is damaged to such an extent that the family is exposed to the weather elements. The department has partnered with private businesses in the area that have generously sponsored the material and the offenders will be providing the labour. The aim of this project is to provide the family a safe and inhabitable house. During the month of October the country would also be celebrating the Month of the Elderly and this would also be the contribution of the Department in the Western Cape to create awareness of the plight, conditions and circumstances under which some of the elderly people in communities are living.
