Support Bandana Day
2010-10-07
EACH YEAR, thousands of South Africans, mostly children and teenagers, are diagnosed with blood disorders such as leukaemia, marrow failure and aplasia. For most, their only chance of survival is a bone marrow stem cell transplant. Sometimes it is possible for a relative to be a donor, but most patients are not so lucky and so a search for a matching, non-related donor must begin. The chance of finding a matching donor is one in 100 000. Bandana Day is celebrated on 12 October, to show support for those suffering from leukaemia and to honour survivors. Bandanas can be purchased from Pick n Pay and BP Express Stores for R20. People are encouraged to wear them on 12 October. Funds raised from the sale of bandanas is used to pay for the testing of donors to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry. If you want to become a donor, visit www.sunflower fund.org.za (0800-12-10-82).
