Locals pedal up a storm

ALTHOUGH the EMG Pro Team dominated the 99km Engen Dynamic Challenge road race last Sunday with teammates James Perry, Dennis van Niekerk, Loto Petrus and Tyler Day finishing respectively in the first four places, local EMG Yorkshire Academy riders performed well. Reynard Butler, also a member of the team, finished third in the u. 23 category. In the mountain-bike challenge (54km) Paarlite Adriaan Louw came second and Wellington rider, Timo Cooper, took the third place. This race was won by the Matie Carl Pasio. Young u.14’s Jean Claude Jantjies and Graeme Ockhuis also showed great performances in the road race category. Jantjies finished first and Ockhuis second after they were in a break-away group of three. A rider of the Academy worth mentioning is 15-year old Franklin Stoffels. He is making good progress in his short cycling career and on Sunday he finished third in the u.16 Engen Cycle Challenge race. The EMG Yorkshire Cycling Academy, based in Paarl, strives to play the role as mentors for its young cyclists in the academy. The academy does not only focus on the development of these youngsters as cyclists, but also has a holistic approach to develop their cyclists in general. Eugene Ruiters of EMG plays an important role at the club with the assistance as sponsor. Through his involvement the academy can assist the youngsters with a number of important resources to participate in the sport.
