Mayoral Cup 2010 kicks off

2010-10-14

THE Drakenstein Mayoral Soccer Cup 2010 was officially launched last Friday at the Mbekweni Thusong Centre and officially kicks off at the Boy Louw Soccer Fields this Saturday.

The tournament starts at 10:00 with the 2009 Cup holders, Mbekweni United, who will play against Power Cosmos on the Boy Louw, B soccer field. All 35 participating teams will play their first round matches on Saturday on different venues in Drakenstein.

With the official launch Mayor Charmaine Manuel emphasised the importance of soccer and sports in development.

“Even though the World Cup has gone, there is still enough reason for the role-players in the sport to remain positive about the development of the beautiful game on a local level. The tournament has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception in 2006. This could be observed by the growing number of teams participating in the Mayoral Cup and that are currently playing under the Drakenstein LFA, especially in the ladies and the junior divisions,” said councillor Manuel.

She also mentioned the 2010 Soccer World Cup Legacy projects, namely the upgrades that took place at Mbekweni Stadium, Weltevrede sports ground and Dal Josaphat Stadium. This must be seen as an opportunity to the soccer fraternity to embrace the facilities and use it optimally for the development of the sport within the various communities. Enough effort must be put in to utilise the facilities and stadiums that were upgraded.

Guests present at the opening event were positively motivated by various speakers. Vernon Seymour, guest speaker and venue manager for the 2010 LOC- Cape Town Stadium urged the soccer fraternity saying.

“We must use the guidelines that were used during the successful Soccer World Cup 2010, when planning local soccer tournaments.”

“We are so quick to use the words ‘impossible, it can’t be done and are so quick to give reasons why the job can’t be done, but we must understand that a successful event hinges on meeting deadlines, thorough planning and doing things right the first time,” he said.
