Key to 1270 homes
2010-10-15
THE construction of houses at the Drommedaris housing estate is due to start by the end of the year. The fully serviced erven of the development have been lying fallow since last year, while administrative difficulties were ironed out by Drakenstein Municipality. But now it is all systems go, says housing councillor Arthob Petersen. A total of 1270 homes are due to be constructed in the estate over the next three to five years at a cost of R20 million, but according to Petersen he hopes the process can be speeded up. All the necessary funding to erect the houses has been allocated by the provincial government. It is now a matter of calling for construction tenders and approving them, before the builders move on site. Several workshops have already been held with the beneficiaries, most of whom are currently living in shacks dangerously close to the railway line. Other beneficiaries come from White City and the B and C hostel blocks. The consultants CSM are currently compiling the tender documents after which they will be advertised. A number of beneficiaries have opted for the People’s Housing Process, in which they become involved in the construction process, and meetings with suppliers (who must supply bridging finance) have already taken place. According to Petersen he will be happy to see the shacks in Drommedaris Street disappear, as the beneficiaries move into their new homes.
