A YOUNG woman was killed and a man critically injured after a head-on collision on the Wemmershoek Road on Monday morning.

The accident took place at 07:25 when the young driver of a twin-cab bakkie allegedly lost control of the vehicle on a very wet road, veering into the oncoming lane and colliding with a car.

The driver of another bakkie, travelling behind the Toyota Corolla, struck the twin-cab when he tried to avoid the accident.

The passenger in the Toyota, Lizarne Leukes (20), died on impact while the driver, Ashley Erasmus (21), was critically injured. Rescue technicians hurried to the scene to free Erasmus, who was trapped behind the steering wheel.

He was then transported to Paarl MediClinic from where he was airlifted to a Cape Town hospital.

The young driver, William Ferreira (18), was on his way to Bridge House School near Franschhoek together with another student, where he is a matric student.

The twin-cab ended up on its side after the collision, but Ferreira and his fellow student sustained no serious injuries.

Ferreira is the son of renowned cellar-master Pieter Ferreira of Graham Beck wines. He had reportedly received his driver’s licence only weeks ago.

The police are now investigating a charge of culpable homicide and negligent driving.

Leukes and Erasmus lived at Drakenstein Correctional Services with their parents who work on the premises.

* In another horrific accident at the weekend, ten people were injured when two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision in Main Street in Paarl South.

According to eye-witnesses, a white Hyundai Atos vehicle was travelling at high speed in a southerly direction near Courtrai, when the driver lost control, ramping over the island in the centre of the road, and colliding with a Fiat Uno travelling into Paarl.

The driver and front seat passenger of the Uno were trapped, while two women and three children on the back seat of the vehicle were injured. One young boy was transported to Tygerberg Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Atos was taken to Paarl Hospital for blood tests and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He will appear in court once the results of these tests are released (see page 2).
