AS a resident of Paarl I was moved by a conversation I had with my nephew in secondary school and we were talking of possible career options. He is a hard-working lass and has always tried his best.
I mentioned to him that maybe he should consider medicine as he has the right subjects for medicine. He replied that looking at the doctors in Paarl, it was the last career he would choose.
I thought about his answer and it took me back to the day that I always apired to be a doctor. In those days, the doctor was regarded as the person in the community with so much compassion, character and integrity.
I could not answer my nephew in a positive way. Unfortunately in our community many of the doctors are either divorced, have affairs or have alcohol problems. I have seen one of these doctors drinking with girls I am sure almost his kids’ age. I was so disgusted when I visited Paarl Hospital and I saw a photo of this specific doctor as one of the heads of a department.
I urge people in our community to please remember that our young people are looking up to them and as such they should always be an example to them.
