Local fashion designer wins award

A LOCAL lass is making inroads in the world of fashion design.

Judy Nel, who matriculated at Huguenot High School in 2008, was awarded first prize for one of her garments at the recent Cape Town Fashion Week.

She is currently a second-year student at the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design in Stellenbosch.

Each year at the prestigious fashion week, design students have the opportunity of displaying their talents during a student competition.

This year the theme for this competition was greyscale, and students had to use grey-recycled materials and the design had to have an avant-garde flair to it. The crux for judging was creative crafting.

“The inspiration for my gown was dried leaves and the structure and form which they take on.

“The fabrics that I used for the different panels of the gown consisted of bathroom mats, Angora wool, old upholstery, denim fabrics, wire and sugar starch to form the structure.”

“It was a huge surprise when my garment won at the Fashion Week. It was truly an earth-shattering moment for me.

“This award will help open many doors for me on my future road.”
