NOT a single teacher from the local high school was in attendance at a prayer service for Mbekweni matriculants on Tuesday evening last week. The service was organised by the ward 9 branch executive committee (BEC) of the ANC. They expressed their disappointment at the absence of the teachers.
The service started 30 minutes late as no teachers were to be seen near the New Apostolic Church. The organisers went ahead since some of the local matriculants were at the venue although the turn-out was very poor. Zuko Gwada, secretary of the BEC in Ward 9, said: “I want to express my disappointment with the poor attendance. We sent invitations to churches and schools so we could show our support for the ma triculants.” Sandisiwe Ramakane (18), Grade 12 pupil of Desmond Tutu High, explained how she appreciates the support from the community. “It has been a difficult year for us. My group and I were teaching ourselves during the Soccer World Cup and the strike,” said Sandisiwe. Thembekile Mangena, chairperson of Ward 9, said: “I am very disappointed with the way the staff of Desmond Tutu have failed to show their support for our children. “Everybody supported them during their strike. But now that we ask them to come and pray with the kids, they do not respond.”
