THE Be Part Yoluntu Centre held an open day and provided the community with an overview over the research and project activities over the last three years.
Researchers attracted the attention of the world in announcing the success of the Microbicide development at the World HIV Conference in June 2010.
Now Be Part Yoluntu Centre celebrates the contribution of the young women of Mbekweni who participate in the very important safety trials for a similar microbicide.
Mbekweni community members also witnessed the completion of two successful projects within the Stellenbosch and Drakenstein communities. Extended funding is also provided to keep the doors of the Mbekweni after hours clinic open for yet another three months.
The Stellenbosch and Mbekweni after hours clinics not only received the prestigious Mail & Guardian Investing in Life Award in 2009, but also managed to double all targets and showed SA and the world the secrets in testing especially young working men, through a poster presentation at the 2010 Vienna World HIV Conference and the 2009 SA HIV Conference.
The Farm Health project team also shared their time and expertise in providing counselling and testing to community members for free for the last time. Through the Farm Health project 410 people living or working on farms were diagnosed with HIV and incorporated into the relevant health care division.
Interested parties and businessess are invited to support Be Part Yoluntu’s continual commitment to research and wellness intervention in the future. Their aim is to ensure that all working people in the Drakenstein area have an opportunity to test for HIV and other pressing health issues.
This can be achieved by keeping the after-hour clinic open and assisting companies in implementing their wellness interventions. C Dr Hellstrom or Jerry at 02-868-3990 for more information.
