THE Paarl Cricket Club’s first team suffered their second defeat in the 45 overs league competition of the Boland Premier Division last Saturday in their derby match against Young Peoples CC at the Parys Oval.

Paarl lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Lee-Roy Walters and Duncan Allan made steady progress and had a 50 run opening stand.

Walters departed off the bowling of Lorenzo Jacobs and after that Paarl steadily lost wickets on an even track.

Graham Adams, 34 runs off 27 balls, and Wayne Jantjies, 39 off 43 balls, took the game to Peoples with a 55 run partnership, but they were unable to see the innings out. Paarl suffered three run-outs in their innings which contributed to the loss of momentum.

Peoples’ best bowler was Justin Ontong with an analysis of 2/33 in his 6 overs.

In reply, Ultellyn Ernstzen made early breakthroughs with his swing bowling and ended with an analysis of 3/22 in his allotted 9 overs.

It was Dominic Daniels, 47* and Tom-Ross Fortuin, 43 off 41 balls, that took the charge to the home side with a partnership of 62 runs for the 6th wicket. Young Peoples scored the winning runs in the 44th over and won the match by three wickets.

The Paarl second team were more fortunate in their match against Darling CC. Darryl Hendricks, 141* off 124 balls and Rudy Andrews, 91 off 108 balls, made a record-breaking 195 opening stand.

Rudy Andrews was unlucky to be run out on his way to his century. Captain Robin Andrews also made a fantastic contribution of 52* off 36 balls as Paarl scored 312 for the loss of only one wicket.

In the reply, Will Langmead took 3/31 in his allotted 9 overs and Byron Walters had 2/8 in 3 overs.

The Darling second XI were dismissed for 107 runs in the 40th over.

This coming Saturday, the first XI will have a bye due to the regional match between Central 1 and Central 2 at the Parys Oval.

The Paarl 2nd XI will be playing against Paarl East II away, Paarl III will be up against Spes Bona II away and Paarl IV will be away against Drakenstein Edu CC (see other results on page 34.
