Stone workshops expand
2005-10-06
STUDENTS learning to sculpt in marble and stone have developed a new appreciation for classic masterpieces.
Visitors to the Paarl studio can frequently hear comments such as “my arms are killing me” and “I don’t know how Michelangelo managed to do a David!”.
Stone is a particularly challenging medium and students are required to wear protective goggles and gloves against flying shards of marble.
The studio opened earlier this year, and will soon include classes in life drawing and clay modelling. These classes will be presented at Paarl’s Art Centre in Hospital Street.
All the classes are presented by Severino Braccialarghe, who trained in Pietrasanta in Italy and recently moved to Paarl to pursue his love for the dying art of sculpting in marble.
“The monumental yard at Clift in Paarl is the only studio in the Cape Town area, and is ideal because it is also able to handle and cut big stone blocks. It is an excellent facility with lots of space.
“With the studio up and running, I have decided to expand the workshop to include classes in life drawing and clay modelling.
“These classes will be optional, but will give students more confidence and also help them to see objects three dimensionally,” he explained.
Prospective students should not be put off by working in the medium.
Although the work can be physically demanding, students will also have the benefit of using more modern tools to create their masterpieces.
The more traditional way of working with a hammer and chisel is a very time consuming method, but modern techniques and tools are much faster, and students should not feel intimidated, he added.
