THIS week the organisers of the 27 For Freedom Race, which commemorates the release of Nelson Mandela from the Drakenstein Correctional Centre, launched the new floating trophy for the 27 km men’s and women’s race.
The trophy is a bronzed replica of the shoes Madiba wore in the last few years of his life in prison. This race will be presented for the second time on 12 February. Charmaine Manuel (Mayor of the Drakenstein Municipality), Jeremy Matheyse (Area Commissioner Correctional Services) and Badih Chabaan (Mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality) were present with the unveiling. Athletes who wish to participate in the 27km, 10km, 5km or 50m (toddlers) can visit www.nm27forfreedom.co.za for more information.
