IN the newly revamped regional structure of the Boland Cricket Board, the Central I team, comprising of clubs from the Paarl-Wellington area, played their one and only two-day match against the Central II side (Stellenbosch area) on 13 and 14 November at the Parys grounds in Paarl. Central I, led by Godfrey Stevens, won the toss and elected to bowl on an overcast morning. It proved to be a fruitful decision and Lee-Irvin Alexander accounted for the wicket of opener Reginald Manuel. The wicket takers in the first innings were Craig Abrahams with 4/38, Lee-Irvin Alexander with 3/19, Ryan Mouton with 2/34 and Krisnan Oosthuizen with 1/7 and Wayne Minnies with 1/0. In their turn to bat, Central I made steady progress with a stable opening stand of 66 between Godfrey Stevens (40) and Kurt Julius (31). Thereafter, the Central I batsmen all made small contributions with none of the batsman going on to make a big score. In their second dig, the Central II team made a disastrous start with Craig Abrahams proving the catalyst with prodigious swing bowling and accounting for the first two wickets with no run on the board. He was magnificently supported by Lee-Irvin Alexander who maintained a steady line and length in support of Abrahams. The Central I bowlers picked up six wickets before the close of play on day one. It was only Gimmie old boy, Gysbert van Zyl, that provided resistance on the first day. He eventually scored 36 after being dismissed on the second morning with a brilliant one handed catch by Wayne Minnies in the mid-wicket region off the bowling of Krisnan Oosthuizen. The Central I team completed the rout when they dismissed the Central II team for 92 which lead to the situation that the Central I team had to go out and score 1 run for victory. However, the Central II team forfeited the match and the Central I team won by 10 wickets. Craig Abrahams ended with a match analysis of 9/54 in 22 overs, Lee-Irvin Alexander 4/43 in 16 overs and Ryan Mouton ended with an analysis of 4/36 in 15.1 overs.
