LAST year’s winner of the Drakenstein’s Mayoral Soccer Cup, Mbekweni United, is 90 minutes away from again holding up the Mayoral Cup. This can make it 4 out of 5 victories for them over the last 5 years. As the favourites throughout the tournament with powerful performances, United never looked like taking their feet off the gas. Last year they beat City Killers 2-0 in the final to claim glory. This year they are up against Mbekweni Sundowns and soccer enthusiasts forecast a fierce battle at the Mbekweni sports stadium with the kick-off at 15:00. There is absolutely no doubt that the two teams to come face to face in the final on Saturday, are both worthy and deserved contenders for the coveted trophy, as both Mbekweni United and Mbekweni Sundowns played well in the earlier stages of the competition. Only the best football on the day will determine 2010’s champion, with the only certainty for the main encounter being the fact that the victors will hail from the kingdom of soccer, Mbekweni. Saturday’s program starts at 09:00 with the u.11 final (to be announched). At 09:45 it is the u.13’s final (to be announched ), and at 10:30 in the o.15 finals it is Mbekweni Sundowns and Mbekweni United. Last Saturday’s matches saw Mbekweni United power through to the final. After two victories they met City Killers in the semi-finals, but the United side overwhelmed their rivals by 7 goals to 2, to set up a mouth-watering final clash this Saturday. Mbekweni Sundowns triumphed over Paarl Soccer Club 1-0 by courtesy of a penalty. It will be followed by the u.17 match (to be announched). This year’s ladies’ final is between Paarl Pirates and Paarl United with the match starting at 12:45.
