PAARLITES who wish to shop in the Paarl CBD, will have to pay for their parking from 6 December, when official parking attendants will take up their duties.
The new system, which makes use of hand-held payment devices, is being implemented by the public/private partner-ship which is involved in the revamp of the area between Van der Lingen Square and Patriot Square.
The area affected from 6 December, is Lady Grey Street (above Verster Street), New Street (above Derksen Street), Fabriek Street and Jan Phillips Square.
Local car guards who have been approved by the police, will be issued with the hand-held devices. They will earn a basic salary plus commission and will be under the command of a local operator.
Clients will pay R3 up front for the first half hour, and an additional R3 for the second half hour or part thereof on their return. The basic fee is R6 per hour (or part thereof) throughout the day.
Car registration numbers will be noted, should clients refuse to pay, and they will receive fines from the Drakenstein traffic department.
The parking devices are rented from the company Parking Management Systems, which operates successfully in Cape Town and other cities.
Plans are also in the pipeline to have booms similar to those on Van der Lingen Square installed on the southern section of Patriot Square and at Wamakers Square (between Pick n Pay and Game). Parking there will be free for the first hour.
Anyone who is interested in buying monthly parking in these areas can contact Johan Pauw on 021-872-0471.
