THE Pre-Primary School Athletics programme in Paarl, which was started by Pieter Lourens in 2006 in commemoration of the late Elize Lourens, got a further injection recently when the Sports Trust and N&M Marketing sponsoring the programme with four sets of IAAF kids’ athletics equipment. This equipment will further help to enhance and develop children’s skills at entry level. Previously they had only focused on short sprints and relays, but will now include field events under the patronage of the Boland Athletics Federation. These IAAF Kids’ Athletics kits include disciplines like rotation throwing, knee throwing, overhead throwing, target throwing, kids’ javelin, formula 1, sprint hurdle, sprint slalom, endurance, cross hop, rope skipping, frog jumping, pole flying and speed ladder. The equipment is ideal for introducing athletics to children between the ages 6-9 years. The scoring system of the IAAF kids’ athletics is so easy that results can be posted almost instantaneously upon completion of a particular activity. The other positive feature of the team ranked scoring system is that the final results are independent from the absolute performance of individual participants. Anita Mathews, executive director of The Sports Trust, says: “We are proud to be associated with a programme and to ensure that they can increase participation at primary school level.” This programme is being extended to other Boland schools in 2011. Lourens ensured that the foundation phase athletics programme continued to take place on an annual basis and in 2009 more than 2000 children between the ages of 6 and 9 participated in the foundation phase athletics programme.
