Spinners keep Paarl in for a chance
2010-11-25
AFTER a disastrous start to the 2010/11 season, Paarl Cricket Club made its intentions clear that none of the other clubs should write them off as contenders for the league title come March 2011. On an overcast day last Saturday, Paarl CC defeated the Paarl East CC at the New Orleans grounds by 59 runs in a 45 over league match. After winning the toss, Paarl captain, Graham Adams, decided to bat first on a wicket that was dry and crumbly. Paarl made a good start with Darryl Hendricks (41) and Kenya ‘A’ international, Duncan Allan (12), providing a foundation of 48 runs for the first wicket with especially Hendricks taking the attack to the Paarl East bowlers. Other meaningful contributions came from Curtis Fourie with 33 and Graham Adams with 24 runs. Paarl eventually scored 158 in their allotted 45 overs. Zynodean Fredericks, 4/30 and Wayne Minnies with an analysis of 2/24 in his 9 overs were the most effective bowlers for Paarl East. In their bowling stint, Paarl made the unorthodox move of starting with off-spinner Lynal Jansen. The move proved fruitful as the Paarl East openers struggled to get going against the bowling partnership of Jansen and Boland opening bowler, Hilroy Paulse. It was only Morné de Vries (40) who showed meaningful resistance against the Paarl attack. The stars of the Paarl bowling attack were undisputedly Hein Adonis with an analysis of 5/19 in only 6 overs and Godfrey Stevens who took 4/5 in 7,2 overs. Paarl East were dismissed for 99 runs in 35,2 overs. Paarl II was involved in a most entertaining match where Paarl lost by 5 runs and where 552 runs were scored on the day against Vredenburg-Saldanha at the Parys Oval. The visitors batted first and amassed 277 runs with Henk Lindeque top scorer with 69 runs. In their batting stint, the charge was admirably led by Elrick Jansen who top scored with 126*. Other meaningful contributions came from Robin Andrews (47) and Byron Walters (27). At the start of the last over, 13 runs were required, but unfortunately Paarl came 5 runs short of the total. This coming Saturday Paarl 1st XI will be entertaining Hermanus in an MTN 40 overs match at the Parys Oval. The second team will be home to Wellington II in a 45 over league match and the Paarl 3rd and 4th sides will be playing on Sunday against Brackenfell III and Excelsior respectively. Both matches will be away and players must report at 08:30 at the clubhouse.
