Boland draws against Namibia

2010-12-02

IN the Cricket South Africa (CSA) endorsed domestic three day competition, Boland crossed swords to a draw with neighbouring country Namibia at Boland Cricket Park on 25-27 November.

The home captain, Omphile Ramela, won the toss and elected to have a bowl at the visitors.

His decision was duly justified and it was the Boland bowlers who led the Namibian batting a merry dance when they dismissed the visitors for 146 runs just before 14:00 on the first day.

Boland bowlers Daniel Childs, with an analysis of 4/35 in 14,2 overs, and swing bowler Karl Nieuwoudt, with an analysis of 4/34 in 12 overs, were the pick of the bunch for the Boland attack.

It was only Gerrie Snyman with 40 runs off 63 deliveries who provided any meaningful resistance to the Boland onslaught.

In their first dig, Boland was more steady than clinical in their dominance of the visitors.

Meaningful contributions with the bat came from Lee-Roy Walters (65 off 121 deliveries), Uwe Birken-stock (51 off 83 deliveries) and Karl Nieuwoudt (50 off 100 deliveries). This enabled Boland to reach a score of 256, a lead of 110 runs, early on the second day.

Namibia’s best bowlers were opening bowler Louis Klazinga with impressive figures of 5/30 in 14 overs and Louis van der Westhuizen with 2/31 in 15,4 overs.

In their second innings, the Namibian side were more positive, with their captain Craig Williams leading the offensive with 144 runs and Nicholaas Scholtz with 150*.

Christi Viljoen scored 67 off 69 balls when he cashed in on a tiring Boland bowling attack at noon on the third day.

Namibia declared their second innings on 477/9 to leave Boland the nigh impossible task of scoring 368 runs in two sessions to win the match.

The pick of the Boland bowlers were once again Childs and Carl Raubenheimer who each collected three scalps in their bowling stints.

In their return to the crease, Boland got an early fright when Emile Kriek was dismissed for 0.

However, it was once again Birkenstock (47 off 76) and captain Ramela (52* off 129) who came to the rescue.

Warren Groeneveldt placed an authoritative stamp on proceedings when he scored 55 runs off 72 deliveries to take the victory away from the visitors.

Proceedings ended with the home side on 214/6 after keeping the visitors in the field for 66 overs on the last day.

In their one day match on Sunday, Boland won the toss and elected to bat. Boland made 184 all out in the 40th over with the only decisive contributions coming from Lennert van Wyk (46 off 72) and local boy Lee-Roy Walters (41 off 50). Namibia’s best bowler was Christi Viljoen (5/27 in 7,2 overs).

In defence of their score, Boland struck early blows when Cobras player Johan Louw made inroads with his dismissal of Raymond van Schoor and Daniel Childs accounting for the dismissal of fellow opening batsman, Wian van Vuuren.

However, Namibian captain Craig Williams steadied the ship with a calculated 85 off 110.

Gerrie Snyman (44 off 38) and Nicholaas Scholtz (36 off 29) made more belligerent contributions to make Namibia’s trip worthwhile with a victory of 6 wickets over the hosts.
