Paarl loses momentum against Hermanus
2010-12-02
THE Paarl Cricket Club lost some of its winning momentum when they were defeated by 37 runs in an MTN 40 over match against Hermanus on Saturday at the Parys Oval. Captain Graham Adams won the toss and elected to bowl first on an overcast morning. The Hermanus openers were in destructive mood when they took the attack to the Paarl opening bowlers of Lyndon Fredericks and Brenton van Schoor. The ex-Cobra and Paarl CC player, Derrick Brand, was the destroyer-in-chief with a calculated 40 off 53 deliveries. Thereafter, W Moolman entered the fray and produced an innings of 82 runs off 90 balls. He was ably supported by Rayno Arendse (28) and F Brooks (19) to take the Hermanus total to 217/6. Paarl’s best bowler was Hein Adonis with figures of 2/26 and Lynal Jansen with 1/15 off 8 overs. In their batting stint, young Darryl Hendricks again showed that he is one for the future when he took the attack to the Hermanus bowlers. After 3 overs, Paarl had 34 runs on the board with Duncan Allan a willing partner in the onslaught. However, Paarl lost momentum with the loss of Hendricks for 18 off 14 deliveries off the bowling of Zahir Abrahim. It was only with the partnership of 86 runs by Lynal Jansen and Kurt Martin that the home side got on track again. With the loss of Jansen, the lower order could not retrieve the momentum with ex-provincial bowlers Bardo Fransman and Abrahim being the Hermanus trump cards at the death of the innings. This coming Saturday, Paarl CC 1st XI will be facing Stellenbosch and Districts in a 45 over league match at home and Paarl II will be travelling to Berg River CC away. The Paarl CC 3rd and 4th sides have completed their fixtures for the first half of the season and will resume their matches on 15 January when both sides are away to Easterns III and Northdene respectively.
