Don't underestimate persons with disabilities
2005-03-24
IN the past, persons with disabilities were described with terms such as “idiot”, “imbecile” and “moron”. For this reason people with disabilities are often underestimated and thought of as useless.
Drakenstein Centre for Persons with Disabilities wants to rectify these misconceptions.
Persons with disabilities often face impediments in most aspects of their lives, such as the workplace.
Most people think that because a person is disabled, they are unable to sustain concentration long enough to work in the open labour market.
However, the new Labour Relations Act has introduced important changes in the area of employment practices.
Some protection is provided for both employees and job seekers against unfair discrimination on the basis of disability, particularly in the areas of unfair dismissal and hiring practices.
Many people with disabilities are not in the position to function independently, perhaps because of the severity of their disability or perhaps due to their personal and social circumstances.
For such cases, a service provider like Drakenstein Centre assists with care, rehabilitation, education, training and job placements.
