Losing streak for Paarl continues

2010-12-09

THE Paarl Cricket Club continued its streak of bad results after losing its 45 over league match against Stellenbosch and Districts over the past weekend.

The Paarl side were put in to bat after Stellenbosch and Districts won the toss on an even wicket. Young Darryl Hendricks once again gave impetus from the start with a timely 38 off 64 deliveries.

Thereafter, it was only Kurt Martin who could provide a meaningful contribution to the Paarl innings with his contribution of 32* off 49 deliveries.

Hillroy Paulse, with 20* off 11 deliveries, gave impetus at the end of the innings to allow Paarl to reach the score of 179/9 at the end of the 45th over. T. Fredericks took 4/32 for the visitors.

In their batting stint, opening batsman Aden Olivier gave the visitors a good start with 30 runs off 46 deliveries.

However, the moment belonged to Ashley Dhelminie (62* off 99) and Timmy Cornelissen (69* off 98), who consolidated an outstanding partnership of 121 unbeaten runs to secure victory for the visitors by 8 wickets.

The Paarl 2nd XI also lost their match against Berg River after making a more than satisfactory score of 242/4 in their 45 overs.

The main contributors were Rudy Andrews with 107 off 134 deliveries and sibling Robin with 74 off 63 deliveries.

The Paarl side was severely weakened to 8 men due to withdrawals and work commitments.

In their turn to bat, the home side scored the winning runs in the 39th over with Randall April scoring 94 off 67 deliveries and Darren Isaacs with a more astute 34* off 41.

Paarl’s best bowler was Will Langmead with 2/13 in 4,1 overs.

) The Paarl over 35 side played in a dramatic match against the Groot Drakenstein Games Club (GDGC) on the past Sunday at the Groot Drakenstein field in Franschhoek.

As per tradition, the hosts bowled first on a dusty wicket and constrained the Paarl side to 97 in their allotted 35 overs.

Paarl’s contributors were Zurich Muller with 32 runs, Cliffie Walters (20) and Elton Du Plessis (19). Alain Cupido returned figures of 4/8 including a hat-trick.

In their turn to bowl, Paarl made adequate use of the low and slow pitch by keeping the GDGC side under pressure with maidens and regular wickets.

Lindsay van der Berg (1/12 off 7 overs), Muller (1/13 off 7) and du Plessis (1/15 off 7) kept it tight with their accurate bowling.

Guest player Abe January took 2/16 off 3 overs, including the final wicket, to allow Paarl to win by 1 run when they dismissed the GDGC side for 96 runs.

This coming Saturday, the Paarl 1st XI will be looking to redeem matters when they face Vredenburg-Saldanha at home. The executive committee urges all the Paarl CC supporters to support the team in their last match before the mid-season break.
