R52m debt write-off is just a cover-up
2005-10-06
THE Paarl Post posters reported a R52m “bonus” for ratepayers recently, in the apparent hope that misinformation sells newspapers.
Our ANC led council would like us to believe that they are helping the poor (while robbing the not so rich) by writing off R52 million of uncollectable debt when all they are doing is covering up their own inefficiency and buying the vote of these unfortunate people, at huge cost, while entrenching two very good South African cultures: the culture of non-payment and the culture of mismanagement.
Anyone with any sense, let alone economic sense, will know that simply stated this vote buying must be paid for by increased rates which in turn will lead to increased rents, wages, salaries and lay-offs and eventually prices, thereby putting the goods and services required by the poor even further out of their reach.
The poor, hampered by lack of knowledge, are being led like lambs to the slaughter by this Judas goat.
One last question: Which councillor is going to get a bonus for reducing the outstanding debts by this large amount?
