Athletes qualify early in season

SPECTATORS at the first track and field league meeting last Saturday at the Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl could not ask for a better start to the 2011 athletics season. The track and field meeting, held by Paarl Athletics Club, was well organised and led to several excellent performances of the athletes. Kulthoom Gaidien from Paarl Girls’ High School was first to perform well. Kulthoom jumped a personal best of 3,20m in the pole vault for girls u.17 and in the process achieved the Boland Athletics qualifying standard for the team to the 2011 SA Youth Track & Field (T&F) Championships. Soon afterwards, Jan-Louw Kotze from Paarl Gymnasium entertained the spectators by breaking the Boland record in discus for boys u.17 with a distance of 58,22m and also achieved the Boland Athletics qualifying standard for the team to the 2011 SA Youth T&F Championships. Anne Matthee from Paarl Gymnasium soon afterwards also broke a Boland record in the discus for girls u.17 with a distance of 30,68m. In the senior women’s pole vault competition, Monique Janse van Noordwyk also achieved the Boland Athletics qualifying standard for the team to the 2011 SA Senior T&F Championships with a height of 3,40m. Finally, Jean-Marie Senekal from Paarl AC, who represented South Africa at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in the 400m hurdles, easily achieved the Boland Athletics qualifying standard for the team to the 2011 SA Junior Championships.
