Be extreme, do it downhill in Paarl
2011-01-20
THIS weekend the first race in the Mongoose downhill series will be held on the slopes of Paarlberg near the Language Monument and more than 60 cyclists will take part in what cyclists call the extreme side of mountain-biking. The weekend’s race is a provincial competition which counts towards an overall result at the end of the series of four races. Practice rounds will be held on Saturday with the real action on Sunday from 10:00. Riders to watch out for are the current South African and Western Province champion Johan Potgieter, Stefan Garlicki (Paarl), Garry Barnard, Jonty Neethling (current world number 11), Andrew Neethling, Arno van der Merwe (Paarl), Adrian Smit (Paarl), Pieter Rossouw (Paarl) and Luke Davis. Last year Garlicki finished 5th in the South African champion-ships held in Pretoria, had a 4th place in the local provincial series in July and in December was 0,17 seconds short of beating Potgieter at the Western Province championship held at Contermans Kloof in Durbanville. This is the second year Garlicki is participating in downhill races. The Paarl track, just below the Monument, caters for all levels of riders and this weekend first timers can compete in the fun competition. Entries open at 10:00 on Saturday.
