Run in the footsteps of Madiba on 12 February

2011-02-03

TO commemorate the 21st anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic release from Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Centre), the second 27 for Freedom Race will be held at this facility on Saturday 12 February.

The race is organised by the Drakenstein Correctional Services, Cape Winelands District Municipality and the Drakenstein Municipality. The 2010 event attracted close to 4 000 entries, as well as an equal number of spectators on the day.

The 2011 event will feature a new 27km route (symbolic of the number of years of imprisonment by the former president), a 10km walk/run event that caters for the youth, elderly and corporate entries and the popular freedom walk/run (5km) on what can be described as a fun-filled day of sports, entertainment, fellowship and nation building.

Entries for the 27km and the 10km events are still open until 5 February. Athletes can enter online or contact the organisers.

Athletes who want to take part in the 5km race can enter on the day from 05:00.

This year the race will be concluded with a concert featuring local as well as national artists.

In addition, a children’s corner and a farmer’s market will add to the festivities of the day.

In addition to R50 000 worth of prizes to be won, the overall men’s and ladies’ winner will walk away with a specially made bronzed trophy and a solid gold Mandela coin.
