IT is with sadness I witness that the more things change the more they stay the same.
Here I am referring to the ward nine meeting held in Mbekweni community hall on 10 February. Not only was the process flawed, but it negated the same democratic values and principles that the ANC has fought for.
The last time I checked the most important component of democracy is the will of the people. How can you impose a potential candidate as a councillor on the people against their will.
Once the people nominated the potential candidates it was dictated to them that a review committee would recommend the “most suitable” candidate after being interviewed by the committee. The people should have a final say in this regard.
Not only is this a distortion of democracy, but it leads to corruption and backstabbing as ward nine is one of the most volatile and baggage filled wards within the Drakenstein Municipality.
I hope that we will not live to regret the day we let ourselves be manipulated through Machiavellian style politicking, as we all know that history has a way of repeating itself.
Democracy is supposedly Government of the people by the people for the people. Aluta continua.
