AS a neighbour I wish to respond to the letter regarding the pet shop (Paarl Post 10/2/2011).
R Nel goes to great lengths to depict the neighbours as being jealous and envious - of what? Of living among flies, rats, a continuous stench and a view of sink roofs and cages? I don’t think so!
Firstly Nel’s reference to the troubles starting when “new” neighbours moved in is far from true. Eleven years have passed since “new” neighbours moved in. This is not my definition of “new”.
Secondly the owner was informed in writing by the Drakenstein Municipality in 2004 that if they receive any complaints of “nuisance” for example flies, mice and stench, his consent to keep a “few” animals will be withdrawn immediately.
Since 2006 we as neighbours have been complaining. The health inspector from Cape Winelands District inspected the property and affirmed our complaints, ruling that the business was not suitable for a residential area.
Thirdly the owner does not comply with the Drakenstein Municipality’s requirements for erecting cages, despite being notified. We as neighbours will not tolerate living in these circumstances. Informed neighbour
