A MAN was killed last weekend when he was struck by a rubber bullet which was fired by a policeman.

At 22:30 on Friday evening, police responded to a complaint of domestic violence at Sakhwatsha Street in OR Square, Mbekweni.

On arrival, police found a man on the rampage, chasing a woman with an axe.

As they stopped their vehicle, the woman hid behind the police, but the suspect, Khangelani Bheja (28), continued to charge threateningly towards police officers with the axe in hand.

When he did not respond to their warning to surrender, a shot was fired at him with a firearm containing rubber bullets.

He was struck in the chest and taken to the Mbekweni police station, where he died shortly after his arrival.

Police spokesperson for Mbekweni, Cst Lungiswa Mqakelana, said that an inquest docket has been registered and is being investigated.
