Rubble tarnishes Paarl

AFTER having spent millions of rands on state of the art business premises, Imperial Cargo is not impressed with Paarl. This freight giant has situated its national logistics hub at a lavish new site between Donkervliet Street and Jan van Riebeeck Drive, Dal Josaphat. But the area surrounding it has now become a mountain of building and garden rubble. And it may not be long before other types of rubbish is also dumped here. Christo Theron of Imperial Cargo, Paarl, said that especially over weekends, building and garden refuse is dumped right next to their building, making it an unsightly neighbourhood. For Imperial Cargo this state of affairs is especially disturbing, as they are committed to laying down a green footprint in the area. The new office building with offices for 120 people, is moving away from standard municipal electricity. Instead, the building is being powered by a state of the art solar system which has been placed on the warehouse roof. All the IT and lighting on site is run off this clean power source. Even when it is cloudy or raining, the panels on the warehouse roof continue to generate electricity as there is still a portion of ultraviolet and infrared light coming through the clouds. On top of this, motion sensors tell the building where the people are, so lights automatically get switched off in empty offices. But the relentless dumping of rubbish now tarnishes all the good work which is being done on this ‘green acre’. A spokesperson for the Drakenstein Municipality, Anthony Sauls, said that an inspection of the area this week showed that illegal dumping is taking place. “The land on which the dumping is taking place, is private land and our law-enforcement division has issued the necessary notifications to the owner to clean up their act. “The owner however responded that he has no control over the dumping and that he currently does not have the means to fence his property. As owner of the property it remains his responsibility to keep it clean. “A final warning was issued to him this week to clean his property in seven days or to face further action. “We furthermore appeal to the public to dispose of the rubble at the municipal dump in Wellington and not to resort to illegal dumping.”
