Couple beaten up

A BUSINESSMAN and his wife sustained extensive injuries last weekend, when they were assaulted by three young men. The incident took place when owners of Ocean Basket restaurant went to a Central Paarl bar and restaurant for a drink on Friday evening after they had closed business for the day. According to Manny Gomez, soon after their arrival the youngsters were already trying to agitate him. “We just wanted a quiet drink and they would not leave us alone.” The couple then decided to move to the verandah outside, but the men followed them. “I had had enough of this and told my wife that we should leave.” But as Gomez was approaching the outside stairs leading down to the Main Street, he was tackled by the three men and fell to the bottom of the stairs. Here they continued to beat him up. His wife, Regina, also did not escape and was beaten on the face and body. A spokesperson for Paarl police, Capt Louise du Plessis, confirmed the incident, but could not say whether any arrests had yet been made. The suspects are aged between 21 and 24 and have a reputation of bad behaviour in public places.
