I WOULD just like to know a few things about the Wellington Minstrels competition that took place during January.
Why were the singers from Paarl penalised and had 15% deducted from their totals, even before they were judged? I see this as nothing else but discrimination.
Singers from Paarl were allowed to enter in previous years and there was never any problem.
The singers only found out about this after their performances. Are we not all part of the Drakenstein region?
I don’t see how this is right, as a good percentage of the spectators are from Paarl as well and we go there to support both the singers from Wellington and Paarl.
Rumour has it that there were also one or more groups from Cape Town and I would like to know if they received the same foul treatment.
Why are Wellington singers allowed to perform at the Paarl Festival of Lights if our people are not allowed to enter their competitions?
And why were the singers allowed to enter in the first place only to be told later that they were not wanted in the competition?
I would like to know who set these rules and why? Is it not good to showcase talent all over our region? Not only is it about singers in a competition, but it is also about uplifting our community.
Can someone please shed some light on this issue?

D van Rooyen, waarnemende voorsitter van die Wellington klopse, reageer: Die mense vir wie jy opgetree het, het jou nooit die waarheid vertel nie. Hulle het goedsmoeds die reëls en kriteria van die kompetisie verontagsaam.
Dit word nie op die dag van die kompetisie aan die groepe of sangers voorgehou nie, maar wel lank voor die tyd aan hulle deurgegee soos ooreengekom en aanvaar deur ’n meerderheidsbesluit in ’n vergadering. Nêrens in ons reëls diskrimineer ons teen Paarliete nie, maar die vereniging het ’n besluit geneem dat hulle Wellingtonners bemagtig en ontwikkel, en daarmee is niks verkeerd nie.
Die vergelyking met die Liggiesfees is irrelevant, want ’n professionele maatskappy is verantwoordelik vir die reëlings en ons as Wellingtonners kla nie oor die 90% vreemdelinge wat daar optree nie.
Geen Kaapse groep het deelgeneem by die klopse nie, en hulle sal nooit toegelaat word om deel te word van die WM
