Too valuable to waste

Too valuable to waste

2011-03-24

ACCORDING to the latest research into the amount of plastic being recycled in South Africa, a total amount of 228 057 tons of plastic was recycled by 193 recyclers operating throughout the country during 2009-2010.

The total amount of plastic converted during 2009 was 1,25 million tons.

Out of the total 573 000 tons of plastic packaging that was produced during this time, 28,9 % was being recycled, compared to 19,7 % in 2000.

A new Integrated Waste Management Facility in Kraaifontein was opened last week, where Plastics Federation of South Africa’s Environmental Director, Douw Steyn, said that the future for recycled plastics looks promising.

“During the last five years, the Plastics Federation of South Africa has consistently been advocating the use, re-use and recycling of plastic with the campaign message, “Plastics: too valuable to waste”.

The latest recycling results, obtained through personally interviewing all the local recyclers known to the PFSA at the time and visiting their facilities, clearly show that South Africans are realising that plastic waste has an inherent recycling value,” Steyn said.

To recycle your plastic waste locally, wash all plastic bottles (removing the tops), plastic containers and bags as well as polistyrene containers, and take them to the municipal recycling centres in Distillery Street or at the Wellington refuse dump.

Also accepted are cardboard, paper, glass and cans.

In parts of Wellington (Ward 2) recyclable waste is collected by the Municipality. This service is to be expanded to other areas soon.
