Sewer construction project through central Paarl
2011-03-24
A SEWAGE pipeline to enlarge the line linking the southern parts of Paarl with the sewage works, is to be constructed through central Paarl. Construction of the section of 3,2 kilometres from Distillery Streeet (Palmiet River) to the Arboretum starts this week (phase 2). Developers in Paarl have been extremely concerned at the limits placed on future property development in the area, due to inadequate bulk services. One of the biggest stumbling blocks has been the upgrading required for the main sewage pipeline running from south to north through Paarl. Expansion to the south, to areas like Boschenmeer, has increased the load on the sewer, requiring construction of a bigger pipeline. WK Construction has been contracted to construct the bulk sewer, which will pass under Lady Grey Street and Market Street by way of tunnelling, so that the roads need not be closed. All work will be done within the public right-of-way and will consist of temporary or permanent re-aligning of certain existing services, excavation in surfaced roads and the reinstatement of road layerworks and surfacing. Construction will affect residents and tenants of Distillery Street, Textile Street and Eiland Street, although most of the route south of Lady Grey Street will run along the bank of the Berg River. Affected property owners will be notified closer to the time when the construction will be affecting property access. They may experience some inconvenience entering and exiting their premises due to limited vehicular access and on-street parking. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be placed in construction areas to help clarify where to avoid parking.
