Paarl's results symbolic of season
2011-03-24
IN its concluding weekend to the 2010/11 season, the Paarl Cricket Club symbolically reflected the course of their season by losing on Saturday against lower placed Coronation Cricket Club and winning against higher placed Van der Stel Cricket Club on Monday. On Saturday, Paarl CC travelled to Pniel and was sent in to bat on an even wicket. They had a disastrous start and lost both openers with no runs on the board. Captain Graham Adams and Lee-Roy Walters steadied the ship and had a 60 run partnership for the third wicket. Wickets then fell in clusters, but Godfrey Stevens anchored the innings and Ultellyn Ernstzen (40 off 38 balls) gave impetus to the Paarl innings. Paarl were eventually all dismissed for 167 with Stevens being run out on 43 off 73 deliveries. In their bowling stint, Rabian Engelbrecht and Hilroy Paulse proved most effective in applying pressure to the top order of Coronation. However, Enslin Williams (56 off 112) withstood the onslaught and laboured his way while cementing the Coronation innings. R Lackay (35 off 39) also made a significant contribution to the innings. Coronation surpassed the Paarl total in the 43rd over and won by 4 wickets. On Human Rights Day, Paarl had to win to consolidate their position in the Boland Premier League for the 2011/12 season. Their match against Van der Stel only started at 12:30 due to a damp pitch and both innings were restricted to 34 overs. The umpires awarded the toss to the visitors who decided to bowl. Once again, the openers fell cheaply and the top order finally got their act together with the partner-ship between Robyn Andrews and Godfrey Stevens (25 off 65). They contributed 69 runs to the cause with Andrews eventually departing for 51 off 72. Paarl amassed 132 runs in their allotted 34 overs. In their turn to field, Paarl struggled early on, but eventually broke the opening stand with Ultellyn Ernstzen accounting for the loss of opener Andrew Cyster. It was the introduction of spin that eventually broke the camel’s back when Lynal Jansen (3/15 in 7 overs) dismissed S Kotze with his second delivery. Thereafter, the Van der Stel batsmen also had to contend with the spinning abilities of Godfrey Stevens (4/11 in 5 overs) and were eventually all dismissed for 96 runs.
