FRIGHTENED, cold, hungry and lost? These are the questions which are being asked after a five-year-old boy went missing from an informal settlement in Franschhoek on Friday. Amila Mahlamvu was last seen playing with a two-year-old friend late on Friday afternoon high against the slopes of Langrug. The two-year-old returned home unscathed, but Amila was not seen again. His panic-stricken mother, Thembeka, alerted the police at 18:00 and all available man-power was used to search for him. When night fell, the search was called off, but on Saturday a search-and-rescue operation took place, with the help of 50 members of the police, K9-unit, volunteers and a search helicopter. The mountains surrounding Langrug were scanned for five days, but there has still been no sign of the boy. A spokesperson for Franschhoek police, Cst Marize Papier, said that enquiries have been made throughout the community, but still there has been no sign of Amila. “We have scoured the mountains and the surrounding area, but have found nothing. Currently the search has been called off, until new evidence arises.” Amila was last seen wearing blue jeans and a striped white T-shirt. Anyone with information on the young child’s whereabouts can contact Sgt Lood Muller on 021-876-8068 or 084-020-5051.
