Tutoring Centre opens its doors in Paarl

THE Acorn Academy, a school and tutoring centre, opened its doors in Paarl on 19 January. Children with special educational needs can receive therapy and tutoring under one roof as well as home schooling. They start intervention as early as four months. “Previously some of the children had to travel as far as Durbanville to get their therapies. Now that we don’t have to travel to get therapy, we can spend more time tutoring than traveling,” said Liebenberg. The academy is situated at 227 Main Street (next to the BMW Garage). They specialise in Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD, Apraxia, Down’s Syndrome, developmental delay and learning difficulties. Therapy options are equine therapy at the Equestrian Centre at the Pearl Valley Estate, speech therapy, occupational therapy and bio-feedback therapy. Liebenberg said that the child does not necessary have to have a diagnosed disorder, but could be a slow reader or need a bit more time to understand things and thus the academy is also there to address those needs. Acorn Academy provides home schooling in a small class setup. When the children finish, they will have the same grades as in mainstream schools. Small study groups for high school students, workshops for parents on various topics and individual tutoring are all part of what the school has to offer. After-care facilities are also available. The learning environment at Acorn Academy is relaxing and fun-filled, creating an atmosphere where children can learn and grow whilst having fun at the same time. “We want the academy to be a place that children are excited to come to.” According to Liebenberg they tackle problems from a holistic perspective so that the child is stimulated in various ways to reach his or her full potential. They also aim to work together with schools and teachers to get the full picture of the child’s educational needs and to help each other with the students individual progress to perform better in school.
