Great golfing action at Paarl Golf Club

Great golfing action at Paarl Golf Club

2005-10-13

SOME 1250 golfers trod the fairways and greens of the Paarl Golf Club during this last week as the local club hosted its 27th Winelands Classic.

The Winelands Classic which started in 1978 was originally a single day tournament with a field of 250 players.

This very popular tournament gave birth to the current Winelands Festival, a very social extravaganza spread over nine days.

The Festival started the Saturday before last with the Champagne Classic. This golf event for mixed teams grows in stature every year.

The following day the Junior Classic was held, where golfers aged 18 and younger took part in a variety of competitions dependent on age and ability.

On the Monday the ladies took centre stage. In this 4Ball Alliance Bogey Plus competition it was the foursome of S Clift, J Malan, A Smit and K Hanekom who convincingly won with a score of +23.

M Strassheim, P Bester, M Neethling and D Potgieter (+15) narrowly edged out C Smales, J Bulgen, G Smith and P Dreyer for the second spot after a count out.

At the following day’s Senior Classic the honours went to A Kitching, S Louw, K Visagie and J Louw.

The rest of the week was made up of two sponsored members' days.

On Friday the course was closed in preparation for the main event on Saturday, the Winelands Classic.

This year another innovative idea was introduced and the clubs were
substituted with fishing rods.

A fishing competition was held on one of the golf course’s dams.
Some 25 ardent fishermen (men and women) tried to entice the fish to bite, with the day’s prize going to S du Toit who wrangled a 5,5kg barbel to the embankment of the dam.

Saturday dawned grey and a little damp, but the weather improved to provide good golfing action.

In a hotly contested competition the team of J Hanekom, R Barnes, PJ le Roux and B Lawrie took the spoils with a score of +22.

They were followed by L Watson, W Kitching, K Watson and P Wessels (+20)

The festival concluded on Sunday with the Paarl Open competition which saw top amateurs from across the Western Cape taking part.

Here it was Oliver Bekker from Stellenbosch who won the title with a
score of 139 five under par.
