2005-10-13
IT was first time lucky for the soccer team of Green Hills United when they won the Paarl Soccer Club’s annual tournament on Saturday.
The team from Groenheuwel outplayed six other teams, including two of the host club, to come away with the trophy.
The teams played in a round robin format with a game lasting 30 minutes. Teams receive three points for a win, two for a points draw and one point for a 0-0 score.
The four teams with the most points battled it out in the semi-finals.
Green Hills won their first match against Paarl A 2-1, but went down to Durbanville 2-0. In their next two matches they drew 1-1 against both Chelsea and Young Stars.
The Green jerseys got back to their winning ways, however when they beat Ethiopian Strikers 2-1 and Paarl B 1-0.
In their semi-final clash they again got the best of Ethiopian Strikers, this time 1-0 after a goal by striker Selvin Grain.
In the other semi-final Durbanville beat Chelsea 3-2 after a penalty shootout.
The titanic final clash came to a thrilling end as the final whistle blew with 0-0 on the score board.
It was up to the accuracy of the respective kickers and the nimbleness of the two goalkeepers to secure victory by means of a penalty shootout.
Green Hills took aim first and struck the back of the net. The scores remained level at 3-3 as midfielder Robert Mdu, man of the match, approach the penalty spot.
His goal once again gave Green Hills the lead.
All eyes were now on Green Hills’ goalkeeper Ricardo Booysen who didn’t disappoint as he saved Durbanville’s fourth attempt giving the Paarl team the 4-3 victory.
