MUSIC therapy sessions, Kids Muzia, are to be launched in Paarl on Tuesday 12 April (11:00) by Esther Koorzen (née Smook). The open day will start at 11:00 at Picardie farm in Paarl South.
Esther, who matriculated at La Rochelle and studied music at Stellenbosch, has been teaching music for thirty-five years. She has achieved great results, especially with the training of children’s orchestras.
She faced the most challenging music post of her career at the British Institute for Learning Development in Dubai, where she became the first full-time music therapist in 2008. She taught 104 therapy classes a month during the mornings, accommodating children from all over the world, all races and all cultures between the ages of 4 to 17 years.
Four instruments (Guitar, Keyboard, Recorder and Piano) were instructed in the afternoons till 16:30. Bands and classical orchestras were formed and performances were held every week.
Therapists and two psychologists assisted the ten teachers. The greatest challenge is the variety of personalities of children with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia and autism.
At her school in Paarl she will present ten lessons per term for pre-school children ranging from ages 3 years to 6 years, preparing them for school and stimulating the brain, incorporating math, speech, spelling, phonics and literacy with music. Mozart and Baroque music as well as various styles will be experienced and the playing of instruments will be incorporated in the curriculum.
Esther appears on the website playing the guitar with the pupils.
Additionally view Google ‘Interactive Metronome’ and see the importance of a constant beat, stimulating and correcting the brain.
