THIS year it will be the 19th time that Paarl Gymnasium (PG) will host the u.16 rugby national schools tournament and the fifth time that Paarl Boys’ High (PBH) will host the u.15 tournament which will be held from tomorrow until 6 April. The format has been changed to include hockey and netball (at PG) and will be spread over a 5 day period with 26 of the country’s top schools participating in the u.16 tournament and 18 schools in the u.15 tournament. Expected highlights at the u.16 tournament are Paarl Gymnasium vs Grey College (18:45), Paul Roos vs Glenwood (14:25), PBH vs Waterkloof (16:35) and Affies vs Outeniqua (17:40) on Saturday. Paul Roos and Grey then have another tough game on the Monday against Waterkloof (16:35) and Monument (15:30) respectively, with the local side BHS taking on Glenwood (14:25). For a complete u.16 program, see http://u16rugbytournament.rgcms.co.za/ProgramWedstryde.html If South African school rugby, power can be measured by the FNB Top 20 list of 2010, the top five schools will all be present at the u.16 tournament and 10 of the top 13 ranking schools will participate. The PG u.16 tournament is the first and still the only event of its kind in South Africa and its long-term goal is to grow this into the most prestigious national u.16 schools tournament – with eventually an international flavour with some of the top international rugby, hockey and netball schools participating. The participating teams will also be introduced on Saturday evening at 19:00 to representatives of the Investec International Rugby Academy and will also have access to a kicking clinic hosted by Louis Koen on Monday from 08:00-10:00. The schools playing in the u.15 tournament at Brug Street are BHS, Jeppe High School for Boys, Glenwood High, Paarl Gym, Strand, Waterkloof, Paul Roos, Framesby, Menlo Park, Boland Landbou, Brits, Punt, Tygerberg, Brackenfell, Grey College, Kempton Park, Monument High School and Langenhoven Gym.
