League champs score 8 tries
2011-04-07
VINEYARDS started the 2011 season as title defenders with a victory over Simondium in front of a capacity crowd at the Dal Josaphat Stadium last Saturday. This match was one of the Boland Summer Festival’s activities. Vineyards struggled to get into gear in the first half playing against the wind, but last year’s league champs showed their worth in the second half, running in 8 tries to 1, eventually winning 52-7. For Vineyards, the wings Anwar-Shuhail Moerat and Sharief Mack were on form and had a picnic with ball in hand. Junaid Moerat (hooker) and Ibie Davids (flank) played their hearts out to secure good ball for the Vineyards backline to dominate with scrumhalf Alvin Farmer supplying his backs with fast, clean ball. Newcomer Dayne Petersen, ex-UWC varsity cup fly-half, and Sharief Mack were named man of the match. The second team drew 12-12 with both tries being scored by centre Shukri Moerat. The third team won 10-0. Saturday’s matches are against Paarl United.
