THE community of the southern part of Mbekweni (Ward 16) has been up in arms over the nomination of a current ANC councillor to represent them in the municipal election. About two weeks ago, an angry crowd tried to invade the house of Councillor Victor Mbubu, and burned tyres in the street, to protest his nomination. On Sunday, government minister Lindiwe Sisulu (Minister of Defence and a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC) visited the ward to calm the waters. She went from door to door to campaign and listen to the complaints. Residents said they had complained to the Boland region and provincial leaders of the ANC about the way in which their ward councillor was elected to stand for the third time in ten years. Linda Mhlebi complained about a lack of service delivery. “There is an area here called Thembani2 informal settlement, where people needed light at night because it is dark there. The councillor did not want to sign for the light to be installed there. He said the people were about to be moved out of the area - that was his reasoning,” said Mhlebi. An angry Nomsa Mdunusi said to Sisulu that Councillor Mbubu is in his 80’s and should stand down: “We love our organisation, but we were not given the right to choose our councillor in the ward. It seems as if there are people who gain from Mbubu being a councillor.” According to the secretary of the Boland region, Zinzo Mthini, all the required processes had been followed during the nomination of the candidate. “People do not understand the process.”
