Candidates announced for local election on 18May

THE candidates for the municipal election in Drakenstein on 18 May, were announced on Tuesday.A total of 13 parties are contesting the election locally, including the ACDP, ANC, Cope, DA/ID coalition, Khoisan, NPP, People’s Democratic Movement, United Christian Democratic Party, Vryheidsfront Plus and Western Cape Community. Number one on the proportional list of the ANC is Abe Bekeer (provincial deputy chairperson). Current mayor Charmaine Manuel has dropped to 5th place. Stalwarts who are retiring from the council include Arthob Petersen and Sikhumbuzo Mgajo. Number one on the Cope proportional list is former ANC supporter Keith Sheldon. Top of the DA/ID proportional list is Gesie van Deventer (mayoral candidate). Current councillors on the list include Koos le Roux, Clara Meyer, Elna von Schlicht, Rean Smuts, Souda Ross, Albertus Buckle, Ben de Goede, Lutisia Daries, Miriam Adriaanse and Conrad Poole. DA stalwarts who are retiring include Koos Louw and Johan von Wielligh. Councillors who have switched parties include Harisha Douman (from ANC to UCDP), Solomon Ross (ID to Democratic Christian Party), Martin le Hoe (ANC to UCDP), Joyce Kroutz (DA to NPP), Alec Theo (ANC to NPP), and Nkosinathi Tyesi (ANC to independent). Former politicians who are aiming at making a comeback are Titus Hendricks (SAPCO), Kilion Cekiso (ANC) and Esther Kearns (DA). See www.elections.org.za.
