Thief on wheels grabs handbag at Mall
2011-04-21
A WOMAN’S handbag was grabbed in broad daylight outside the Paarl Mall by a ‘thief on wheels’ this week. The incident took place on Monday at approximately 16:00 when a woman was walking to her vehicle with her elderly father. Dr Henriette van Schalkwyk, a Wellingtonner who now resides in England with her husband, was busy looking for loose change in her purse to pay a car-guard at the Mall, when the incident took place. In the handbag were British pounds to the value of R1500, a valuable iPhone cellphone, as well as her passport. According to Mall manager Faizah Behardien, a young white man on scooter drove past her and grabbed her handbag from her shoulder. “Our security staff who witnessed the incident immediately alerted us and the police were contacted. “We have evaluated video material from our security cameras which caught the incident on film, and police are positive that an arrest will soon be made. “At Paarl Mall we are committed to ensuring the safety of our clients. Because Van Schalkwyk’s cellphone has been stolen, contact could not be made with her for comment. Anyone with information can contact Cpt Beukes on 021-807-4000.
