THE Executive Mayor of Drakenstein, Charmaine Manuel, recently handed over an amount of R500 000 in cheques to needy schools in Drakenstein.
This money was made available even though schools are not a primary function of local government and this decision was made against the backdrop of the many requests received from schools for support.
The schools’ principals undertook to honor the commitment they have signed to use the funds for the purposes as stipulated in the memorandum of agreement.
Said Manuel: “We as council have invested in young people from poor communities to allow them te equip themselves with the necessary skills to be successful in life.
Even though the Provincial Education department providces funding to schools, it is simply not sufficient to address all the needs. This is further complicated by poverty and the high rate of unemployment.
